The South sues the European Union
Climate Justice instead of idle talk! -Photo, filming and interview opportunity
On Tuesday 1 December 2009 at 14.00, Broederlijk Delen – in cooperation with CIDSE, the international alliance of Catholic development agencies it is member of - will organise a visual protest in the run-up to the climate summit in Copenhagen. Climate experts from Bolivia, on their way to Copenhagen, will take part in this action, to make the voice of climate change’s biggest victim, the South, being heard.
- What: The South will bring the EU to court for its failure so far to commit to additional climate change funding and the subsequent risk it will use existing development aid commitments to meet its new obligations for climate financing. The devastating impacts of climate change have placed an additional burden on poor people in developing countries, a result of the fossil fuel based growth of developed countries. Climate financing is urgently needed, but money for health and education must not be diverted! We therefore call for Climate Justice.
- When: Tuesday 1 December at 14.00
- Where: In front of the Justus Lipsius building on the Schuman Square in Brussels
In the run up to the Copenhagen summit starting 7 December, Europe will sit in the dock of our tribunal of Climate Justice. A Bolivian delegation travelling to Brussels to meet Belgian and European Members of Parliament will take part in the action. Elizabeth Peredo, Director of Fundación Solón and the Bolivian Platform against Climate Change, witnesses the devastating impacts of climate change in her daily work. After short interventions by the judge and the public prosecutor, she will testify against the European Union and make a plea for climate justice. Climate Justice campaigners will hold up signs with slogans such as ‘The polluter must pay’.
The Climate Justice hearing starts at 14.00.
Representatives of Broederlijk Delen, CIDSE and the Bolivian delegation will be available for comments and interviews.
