Lawyers reveal Ashton’s EEAS proposal breaches EU law

Development NGOs demand urgent revision of the current proposal as it puts world’s poorest at risk

Development NGOs from across Europe and beyond call for an urgent review of the proposal on the European External Action Service (EEAS) by foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, at the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting, in Luxembourg. The blueprint breaches the Lisbon Treaty and goes against common EU interest and that of the world’s poorest, NGOs warn.

20100510_press release FAC conclusions food security

Foreign Affairs Council conclusions on food securityResources and oversight needed to make new food security commitments work 10 May 2010The faith based development networks CIDSE, CARITAS Europa and APRODEV have welcomed the adoption by the Council today of conclusions on

20100603_Bonn negotiations May June 2010_fast start finance

EU report on climate finance: Bare bones, No Meat

A group of NGOs, including CIDSE, welcome the EU’s preliminary report on so-called ‘fast start’ finance commitments by developed countries as a first step toward rebuilding trust with developing countries. The report was presented today in Bonn, where representatives from all corners are attending the first full session of climate negotiations since the Copenhagen summit. The an analysis the NGOs welcome the EU’s efforts to get desperately needed money out to the world’s poorest countries, many of which are already suffering the effects of climate change. However, the lack of transparency in the EU’s latest progress report will undermine trust at a very delicate stage of the talks.

20100604_Gaza flotilla_less ambiguity please

Less ambiguity about Gaza, please

4 June 2010

There was never much doubt that Israel would try to stop the Free Gaza Flotilla and prevent a group of 750 international volunteers from delivering 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza. After all, its navy sank a ship belonging to the Freedom Gaza movement last summer and the government recently finished work on a detention centre that the Israeli media last week reported was intended to host arrested international volunteers. No one, though, thought the Israeli army would board the boats in international waters and would kill at least nine people.

20100610_CONCORD Aidwatch report 2010

EU aid own goals pushing MDGs out of reach

Toronto G20: A small tax on financial transactions could create big change, CIDSE says

Leaders of G20 countries, meeting in Toronto this weekend, can translate good intentions into concrete action to tackle the global economic crisis by adopting a small tax on financial transactions. According to CIDSE, an international alliance of Catholic development agencies, its revenues should be used to finance development, including and beyond the Millennium Development Goals, and other global challenges such as combating climate change.

G20 Summit Toronto, 26-27 June 2010

G20 Summit Toronto, 26 27 June 2010CIDSE STATEMENT The world continues to be in the throes of an economic crisis.
The people of Gaza need trade, not aid. Unconditional access of commercial goods and people is vital to give the citizens of the occupied territory hope for a better life. In a statement issued today in occasion of an expert seminar in Brussels, faith-based development agencies APRODEV and CIDSE call on the EU to urge Israel to open border crossings unconditionally and end the blockade of Gaza. Leading experts working on Gaza participated in the seminar.

International experts confirm financial transactions can be taxed

Nine experts from all over the world announced today that taxing financial transactions is feasible. The expert group consisted of a mix of nationalities and professional backgrounds was appointed by 12 governments belonging to the 55 country-strong inter-governmental International Leading group on Innovative Financing for Development. The governments mandated them to define options for a tax or voluntary contribution on international financial transactions to generate money for development. CIDSE, which urged G20 countries to agree on a global financial transaction tax in the run up to their recent meeting in Toronto, welcomes the group’s conclusions.
