The performance of transnational corporations should be at heart of development discussions, because they have an increasingly important role in shaping global and local economic and political structures.

Hence, CIDSE believes that corporations need to take up their responsibility as stakeholders and contribute to sustainable development. In order to advocate for this, CIDSE has joined its voice to northern and southern civil society that calls for the application of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) which applies to all ‘organs of society’ including transnational businesses. We are currently focusing on 3 major areas of work:

- Transparency: Country by country reporting
- Extractive Industries in Latin America
- Business and Human Rights in the United Nations

In our fight to prevent business enterprises from becoming complicit in, or tacitly benefiting from, human rights violations, we work in close cooperation with our southern partners and aim to support their demands especially at UN and EU levels.

Highlights

CIDSE demands on corporate transparency met by European legislators

Campaigners celebrated as the European Parliament and European Council met key demands of the coalition on corporate transparency, Publish What You Pay. CIDSE has demanded changes to the Accounting and Transparency directives which will require oil, gas, mining and forestry companies listed on European stock exchanges to publish what they pay governments. This country-by-country-reporting will improve the possibility of local campaigners to learn what their governments are paid by European and transnational companies.
