It is widely recognised that a radical transformation of food and agriculture systems is urgently needed in order to address converging social, economic, health and ecological crises. The European Green Deal and the Recovery Plan for Europe are important opportunities to mobilise public finance for sustainability transformations. The potential of agroecology to transform food systems and render them more resilient, sustainable and inclusive is increasingly recognized and backed by a growing body of scientific evidence. However, research shows that only a marginal proportion of public funding is dedicated to agroecology.

PROGRAMME
  • Introductory speeches by Hans Herren (IPES-Food and Biovision Foundation) and Shalmali Guttal (Focus on the Global South)
  • Presentation of key findings of recent studies on EU, French, UK, Belgian, Danish and Swiss public funding for agroecology by the authors
  • Interactive panel discussion between researchers of the Centre for Agroecology Water and Resilience (CAWR) of Coventry University and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and donors and recipients of such funds. The panel will explore existing opportunities and challenges for the scaling-up and -out of agroecology through financial support.

Moderation: Emile Frison (IPES-Food)

CIDSE contact: François Delvaux, Agroecology and Food Sovereignty Officer
