Beatification of Archbishop Romero 23 May

Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero will be beatified in San Salvador on May 23. A vocal advocate for the poor, Archbishop Romero was shot and killed on March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass in a hospital in San Salvador during the civil war.

Many of CIDSE’s members find inspiration in Romero’s work with the poor, and several activities will be organized by them on the occasion of his beatification. Below you can find links to the activities and statements by some of our members:

TrĂ³caire, who funded some of the Archbishops work in El Salvador has published two blogs about the beatification of Archbishop Romero and about his noteworthy life and death calling him “an outspoken champoin for the poor” here, and a hero here

KMB (a ‘member of CIDSE Austrian member KOO) annually awards a “Romero-Preis” to people for their contribution to human rights. KMB will organize an event to celebrate the beatification and the 35th anniversary of the award on the 20th of November this year.
