Bayer-Monsanto merger must be rejected

Civil society open letter to Margrethe Vestager, European Competition Commissioner.

The European Commission will conclude its investigation into the Bayer-Monsanto merger in the coming days. CIDSE is joining a call by civil society organisations urging the Commission to prevent what could become the world’s largest agriculture company, dominating the seeds and chemicals markets for the years to come.

CIDSE, the international family of Catholic social justice organizations, and Iglesias y Minería, the ecumenical network of 70 grassroots organizations working on impacts of mining in Latin America, congratulate and welcome the recent publication of the Pastoral Exhortation of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean "Missionary Disciples Custodians of the Common Home, Discernment in light of Laudato si’," recognizing the valuable participatory effort in the elaboration of it.

The high level of violence against environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs) is becoming a very worrisome phenomenon in Latin America. These kind of defenders, who operate, for example, in the context of the extraction of natural resources and megaprojects, are often left without any protection in the face of violations and abuses by states or private actors.

The EU-LAT network and CIDSE together made up of more than 57 European and international organizations, echoing the requests of COPINH and backed by representatives of the European Parliament, demand justice, remembrance and the guarantee of non-repetition for Berta Cáceres, as well as for the defense of human
rights in Honduras and throughout Latin America.

Ready for the World Social Forum 2018

After Montreal in 2016, the World Social Forum is back in Brazil where it was first held in 2001. This year, it will take place in Salvador de Bahia from 13 to 17 March under the slogan “To resist is to create, to resist is to transform!” in a difficult national political context. We are looking forward to this space where alternatives to the current economic system are explored fostering our engagement for system change.
