Lent 2018: open up your heart and engage

With the Lenten period starting, we are called to slow down and take some time to reflect, looking both inwards and at the community around us. In his message for the season, Pope Francis invited people to renew their enthusiasm for their faith and to revive the feelings of charity in their heart. Many of CIDSE’s members are running Lenten campaigns in their countries on hunger, peace, quality of living, transformation, solidarity, and they offer several opportunities to reflect and engage.

European networks and international human rights organizations express their deep concern over the disproportionate and sometimes fatal use of force employed by security forces of the state against protesters, as well as other attacks on human rights defenders in the context of the post-election crisis in Honduras. We call on the European Union to condemn these incidents, to publicly support the defenders, and to request the Honduran State ensure that international human rights obligations are fully respected.

Blogging towards systemic change

We are proud to launch CIDSE’s new “Voices for Change” blog. This blog space is dedicated to “systemic change.” It will reflect and analyse current issues that are challenging and transforming systems such as those for producing and consuming food or energy, at their intersection with greater systems of injustice: patriarchy, racism, colonialism or capitalism. It will also bring stories of change to break out of abusive and unjust systems, however small or big the change. We look forward to contributions from the CIDSE family, partners and allies to this blog space.

Trócaire and the Global Catholic Climate Movement have launched a guide for faith-based institutions concerned with the ways in which their investments align with their mission and vision, particularly in light of the global challenge of climate change.

On the eve of the One Planet Summit in Paris, France, as governments and stakeholders gather to discuss the urgent need for climate finance, over 195 civil society groups released a letter being sent to leaders of multilateral development banks, including the World Bank, and leaders of G20 governments.
