Ready for the World Social Forum 2018

After Montreal in 2016, the World Social Forum is back in Brazil where it was first held in 2001. This year, it will take place in Salvador de Bahia from 13 to 17 March under the slogan “To resist is to create, to resist is to transform!” in a difficult national political context. We are looking forward to this space where alternatives to the current economic system are explored fostering our engagement for system change.

Talk is not enough! Canadians take action across the country for mining justice

Nearly a decade has passed since Canadian industry and civil society leaders recommended that their government create an ombudsperson to handle the grievances of people affected by Canadian oil, gas and mining companies operating overseas. Development and Peace has been at the forefront of this movement for access to justice for victims of human rights and environmental violations in that time.

On March 2nd, CIDSE President Éamonn Meehan and Secretary General Bernd Nilles joined Fr. Dario Bossi of the Ecumenical network Iglesias y Mineria and Joselma Alves de Oliveira, a resident of the community of Piquiá de Baixo, to meet with Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development at the Vatican.

The European Union (EU) has today taken a positive, but half-hearted, step towards cleaning up Europe’s trade in minerals. EU legislators concluded their negotiations on a new law on so-called ‘conflict minerals’—a Regulation which is meant to ensure that minerals entering the EU do not finance conflict or human rights violations.
