Mineral sourcing: Will EU law change things for people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?

In March, the European Commission proposed legislation that aims to prevent European companies’ mineral purchases from financing conflict or human rights abuses. Mgr. Maroy, Archbishop of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), visited Brussels and spoke about whether EU legislation can bring changes for the good of humanity. MISEREOR greets European Parliament support for transparency in natural resources and extractives sector

Together with other civil society organisations, CIDSE member organisation MISEREOR greeted the European Parliament decision on the Commission proposal on transparency for large corporations in the oil, gas, mining and forestry sectors. The new rules will force them to reveal their payments, such as taxes and concessions, not only by which government receives the money, but also by project. (Press release in German below)
