Press release: Justice for Berta Cáceres, protection for the defense of human rights in Latin America
The EU-LAT network and CIDSE together made up of more than 57 European and international organizations, echoing the requests of COPINH and backed by representatives of the European Parliament, demand justice, remembrance and the guarantee of non-repetition for Berta Cáceres, as well as for the defense of human
rights in Honduras and throughout Latin America.
European networks and international human rights organizations express their deep concern over the disproportionate and sometimes fatal use of force employed by security forces of the state against protesters, as well as other attacks on human rights defenders in the context of the post-election crisis in Honduras. We call on the European Union to condemn these incidents, to publicly support the defenders, and to request the Honduran State ensure that international human rights obligations are fully respected.

On Thursday, the European Parliament will vote on the law on the responsible sourcing of minerals, a regulation aimed at ensuring that revenues from minerals imported into the European Union do not finance infringements of Human Rights and armed conflicts around the world. Civil society organizations have already highlighted that the long-debated final text is less ambitious than the one initially proposed by the Parliament.
