European Parliament vote on emission reductions drives EU member states towards -30%

CIDSE welcomes today’s resolution by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee saying the EU should pledge to reduce its greenhouse gas emission by 30% by 2020.

(Brussels, 24 May 2011) CIDSE welcomes today’s resolution by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee saying the EU should pledge to reduce its greenhouse gas emission by 30% by 2020. The international alliance of Catholic development agencies urges EU member states to agree on a collective 30% move when Environment Ministers meet in Brussels on 17th June.

“Today the European Parliament’s Environment Committee joined millions of people calling for the EU to lead once more on climate change, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020,” said Bernd Nilles, CIDSE Secretary General.

“We know more ambitious emission reductions are the right thing for people and the planet and it works for the economy too. Governments should acknowledge this and agree on a collective 30% reduction target. CIDSE member organisations will continue to urge their governments to do what is both morally right and urgently needed ahead of the Environment Council next month in Brussels.”
