CIDSE & the Global Catholic Climate Movement co-hosted a webinar direct from Marrakech on 14 November which brought together experts and other actors to discuss the UN Climate Negotiations – COP22.
The webinar updated participants on the latest developments from within the negotiations and highlighted all the different present and upcoming initiatives on climate action around the world and carried out by citizens. In this way, it aimed to inspire bolder action for climate justice in the next months, while connecting with the worldwide mobilization that even after Paris (December 2015) continues to call for climate justice and greater ambitions to tackle climate change.
Following the entry into force of the Paris Agreement, COP22 U.N. climate negotiations in Marrakesh (Nov 7-18) focused on increasing national and international efforts in mitigation, adaptation and implementation measures, while consolidating commitments to keep temperatures under the established 1.5 degree threshold. Finally, as Pope Francis recently stated, “it is up to citizens to insist that [governments honour their commitments], and indeed to advocate for even more ambitious goals”, while reminding us that “2015 was the warmest year on record, and 2016 will likely be warmer still” (Message for the World Day of Prayer for Creation, Sept 2016).
