Dams and business accountability in the Amazon region

Event Details

The destruction of the Amazon is a concern of global relevance. Deforestation is not the only threat to this region: thousands of dams have been constructed and planned, and mining activities for petroleum and iron extraction continue to expand despite the global call for climate justice. Not only States but also business actors play a significant role and have responsibilities. In this context, we will discuss how the future treaty can contribute to prevent impunity and to establish standards of civil, criminal and administrative liability for companies, as well as effective sanctions and redress measures.
