Webinar on Palestine and the situation in Gaza

Event Details

NEW! Article and webinar recording:

Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada (DPCC), CIDSE Canadian Member Organisation, is organising a WEBINAR ON PALESTINE to mark the grim milestone of the completion of a year of war in Gaza on October 7, 2024.

The present conflict, though inflamed by a paroxysm of violence a year ago, goes back much further. To better understand its context and history, we invite you to sign up for Development and Peace – Caritas Canada (DPCC) Webinar on Palestine.

When? Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (7:00 p.m. CEST).

How to participate: Register via this LINK (mandatory).

Languages: Interpretation will be available in EN, FR.

Context

A year earlier, Hamas’ brutal attacks, which DPCC condemned unequivocally, had claimed the lives of over 1,000 innocent Israeli civilians. Israel’s retaliation was expectedly swift. It’s brutality and relentlessness, however, exceeded everyone’s worst expectations.

Having killed over 41,000 and injured over 96,000 people in Gaza, Israel has now expanded its deadly campaign into Lebanon. Its actions, which Pope Francis has deemed “disproportionate,” “domineering” and “immoral,” threaten to inflame the entire Middle East.

Besides making perfunctory calls for a ceasefire, most Western nations―including Canada―have done little to reign in or even firmly denounce Israel.

How did this come to be? How are the people in Gaza coping? How are partners helping them? How has DPCC responded? What can people do to help?

These are some of the questions that this Webinar will answer.

The panelists:

  • Fr. David Neuhaus, S.J., a member of the Jesuit community in the Holy Land and a longtime teacher of Scripture, who will speak on the history and antecedents of the Israel-Palestine conflict
  • Anton Asfar, the secretary general of Caritas Jerusalem, who will provide an overview of the current situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank
  • Nagui Demian, the international programs coordinator at DPCC, who will explain how Canadian’s contributions are enabling our partners’ response to the crisis
  • Hélène Gobeil, DPCC’s director of communications and campaigns, who will summarize our advocacy on this issue and our work with on it with civil society partners in Canada
