The FTT for people and the planet – Financing climate justice

CIDSE Recommendations. June 2011

This document presents CIDSE’s views on the Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) and how part of its proceeds could be used to finance climate justice.

CIDSE believes that the scale and nature of tackling the climate change challenges calls for the adoption of a number of innovative mechanisms which are public money, can generate adequate finance and follow the ‘polluter pays’ principle. CIDSE has long advocated for the proceeds of a Financial Transaction Tax to be used for development and climate change. This paper discusses how they should be governed and allocated; with a particular emphasis on the need for strong social and environmental safeguards.
