More than 35 faith-based organisations are promoting the Platform for Divestment from Mining, an initiative inspired by Laudato Si’ that proposes withdrawing investments from mining projects linked to social injustice and environmental damage, especially in the Global South.
The Platform is a collective action that seeks climate justice, recognising its structural roots. Mining plays a key role in the climate crisis, global inequality, and arms race, as it sustains consumption patterns in the Global North and geopolitical conflicts over control of minerals. Divestment seeks to prevent churches and religious organisations from being complicit in human rights violations and ecological crimes by investing in funds or banks related to extractivism.
It promotes the construction of ethical guidelines for financial practices in faith-based organisations, in line with integral ecology and Vatican documents such as Mensuram Bonam.

From 19 to 21 March, CIDSE, alongside 40 faith-based organisations, will participate in the first meeting of the Platform in Rome. The event will bring together religious and social leaders from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and North America—such as Cardinal Álvaro Ramazzini (Guatemala), Monsignor Vicente Ferreira (Brazil) and Amayra community Indigenous leader Yolanda Flores (Andes) — who will share experiences on the devastating impacts of mining in their territories.
Ecumenical dialogue is at the core of the Platform and the meeting will also welcome the presence of guests, such as Reverend Emilie Teresa Smith (Canada), known for their activism in human rights and the articulation of churches.
