On the way to COP30: CIDSE at the SB62 climate negotiations in Bonn
The UNFCCC’s Climate Meetings (SB62), will take place at the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB) from 16 to 26 June 2025. This will be a key moment to shape discussions ahead of COP30 in Belém in November. A CIDSE delegation will be present in Bonn, consisting of Secretariat staff and representatives of the following member organisations: CAFOD (England & Wales), Fastenaktion (Switzerland), KOO (Austria), Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns (USA), Misereor (Germany), SCIAF (Scotland) and Trócaire (Ireland).
As the world commemorates the 10th anniversary of both the Paris Agreement and the Laudato Si’ encyclical, the urgency of the climate crisis demands bold, justice-driven responses. Record temperatures in 2024 highlight the deepening impact of climate change, poverty and inequality. The upcoming UNFCCC intersessionals in Bonn (SB 62) provide a vital opportunity to promote transformative, coordinated and ambitious climate action. Parties are expected to lay the groundwork for updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that align with the 1.5°C target, reflecting key outcomes of the global stocktake to phase out fossil fuels, expand renewable energy sources, and ending deforestation in a socially just manner. Progress on transforming food systems through agroecological approaches is also vital. The intersessionals must also address the need for a just transition that prioritises the needs of vulnerable communities, indigenous peoples and marginalised groups in decision-making processes. Discussions on climate finance in Bonn should focus on providing clarity and greater support to developing countries, including debt relief and implementation of the Baku-Belem roadmap. It is also essential to strengthen the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage to ensure that communities already facing climate devastation receive timely and sufficient grant-based support. The outcomes of SB 62 will play a defining role in shaping equitable and effective pathways towards COP30 and beyond.
