CONTEXT
With global temperatures set to rise by more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, resulting in devastating impacts on communities and people’s lives, as we have seen this year in different parts of the world, the need to drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions and tackle the climate crisis has never been greater. However, this cannot be addressed in isolation; the social and economic crises we are facing must also be part of the equation. Amid growing attacks on multilateralism, the first conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels (TAFF) in Santa Marta, Colombia, in April, showed that countries must act together. In this context, the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference (COP31) is set to take place in Antalya, Türkiye from 9 to 20 November 2026.
OUR DELEGATION
The CIDSE delegation in Antalya will consist of Secretariat staff and representatives of the following member organisations: CAFOD (England & Wales), Fastenaktion (Switzerland), FEC (Portugal), KOO (Austria), Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns (USA), Misereor (Germany) and Trócaire (Ireland). They will join partners and allies from the Global South and the Global North to urge world leaders to take bold decisions to protect our common home.
OUR OBJECTIVES
Through various spaces, CIDSE will aim to:
- Strengthen coordination among Catholic actors and Regional Bishops’ conferences,
- Influence official delegations of Ireland and Tuvalu to ensure that faith communities contribute to shaping a just, equitable and people-centred transition,
- Connect faith actors and broader civil society networks around the momentum on the 2nd Just Transition away from fossil fuels conference (JTAFF2) in July 2027 and COP32 in November in Ethiopia.
As an International Catholic organisation, we see the climate crisis as a moral crisis that hits the poorest first. With growing emission rates of greenhouse gas, the effects of climate change have intensified, affecting local communities and increasing inequalities globally.
| OUR ADVOCACY PRIORITIES Just transition away from Fossil Fuels Building on the first Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels (TAFF) held in Santa Marta, CIDSE calls for: • A binding Fossil Fuel Treaty as the only credible mechanism to complement the Paris Agreement and as the way to phase out dependency on coal, oil and gas. • Governments at COP31 must align their fossil fuel transition roadmaps with their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), long-term strategies and National Adaptation Plans, recognising historical responsibility and loss and damage. • Finance must shift to decentralised, community-led renewable energy, and faith communities and marginalised groups must have a real say in decisions. Climate finance Caring for our common home means standing with those who did least to cause the crisis, but suffer its worst impacts. Finance must reach countries that need mitigation and adaptation investment but face limited fiscal space and debt. CIDSE calls on countries to: • Communicate multiannual post-2025 climate finance commitments, including for climate funds, in line with their fair share of the USD 300 billion goal and tripling adaptation finance by 2035. • Make the Climate Finance Work Programme central to negotiations and engage with it, as well as provide clarity on the implementation of the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). • Divest from fossil fuels and fund a just transition. |
